The Russian made Volga motorcar was the hot favourite for the Saint Petersburg's taxi fraternity, they are chunky, comfortable, and usually yellow. These are quickly being replaced by Western imported cars.

For un-metered taxis, negotiate a price before taking the ride, journeys in and around the city centre cost round 200 roubles. Payment, by law, should be in roubles but many accept US dollars and euros.

Booking a taxi by telephone usually requires the taxi center to call you back so they may relay a description of the taxi (i.e. make, colour, licence plate number) in addition to confirming that you are genuine.

Tip:If you can’t speak Russian it’s always worth getting someone to scribble down your accommodation address in Russian or taking a hotel card with you.
