Whether walking or driving in St. Petersburg this problem seems to be accepted by locals. They instinctively have a keen eye and avoid all manhole/drainage covers. This example shown was found right in the middle of the road.

In general, it is advisable not step on any form of municipal road or pavement covering (manhole or drain covers) as the likelihood of it being fitted securely will be remote, otherwise you really will see St. Petersburg from a different perspective!

Of course this hazard is further increased in winter with a nice covering of camouflaging snow!
